In loving memory of…….

Prof. Shashi Prateek

It is a matter of profound grief and irreparable loss to the family and entire medical fraternity on the unforeseen departure of a brave heart, who was a loving mother, devoted wife, caring daughter, surgeon par excellence, a competent teacher, ever compassionate, focused on social outreach activities, trained from London and Sydney University and a phenomenal well-wisher for everyone, especially females and above all a wonderful human being with a heart of pure gold, Prof Shashi Prateek moved on to her heavenly abode on 12th June 2021 at age of 71 years after her extremely courageous battle with COVID-19.

Prof. Shashi Prateek was born on 10th October 1950, completed her MD degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology from LLRM Medical College, Meerut, in 1980 and joined Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, in 1989. From 2004, she served as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was later adorned the position of Professor and Head of Department, Obstetrics and Gynecology, VMMC and Safdarjung Medical College, New Delhi, from 1 January 2011 to 31 October 2012. She joined AIIMS, Rishikesh as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

AIIMS Rishikesh was fortunate to have her as a part of its family. Her relentless services to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as a Senior Professor from November 2018 to October 2020 are remarkable. Being an enthusiastic teacher and mentor, she always promoted research at all levels. Every surgery under her and every occasion was celebrated. She called her unit 'THE HAPPY UNIT', because she made sure it was. She ensured equal opportunities for faculty and residents. Blessed with fantastic communications skills, Prof. Shashi Prateek was a brilliant administrator. You would not even know that you have been reprimanded, but the message would be delivered and the job would be done.

Her illustrious career brought her many national and international accolades. A kind, compassionate doctor, she was empathetic to concerns of her patients. A brilliant surgeon, she was known for performing challenging vaginal surgeries. Prof. Shashi was an ardent upholder of the rights of women and the downtrodden.

In addition to medical school assignments, Prof. Shashi did admirable and tremendous work in social outreach. She and her NGO 'Health is Wealth' Foundation regularly conducted multiple free medical camps in villages, distributing free medicines to patients and giving awards/monetary scholarships to underprivileged students. Her mission in life was to serve the underserved in the Society and extend help in rural interior villages to the last mile of humanity.

Despite many feathers in her cap, she had an unassuming personality. Prof. Shashi Prateek was awarded the prestigious 'Unsung Hero Award' by Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecological Society of India in 2018.

Prof. Shashi Prateek may not be with us today, but her love of life will live on. She is survived by her husband, her two children, her brother and the love she invoked in the hearts of her near and dear ones including innumerable students, patients and friends.
