Revised BG prasad socioeconomic status scale for the year 2022: Updation based on latest base year series 2016

The division of communities into several strata depending upon the sociodemographic features of individuals is known as social stratification.[1] It can assist in the identification of at-risk groups in society and the adoption of disease prevention measures for such groups.[1] The socioeconomic status (SES) of a person is an important indicator of his or her well-being.[2] SES refers to a person's or a family's social status.[3] SES incorporates money, education, occupation, family effluences, social involvement and political control making it capable of determining a person's economic and social position.[3] This scale combines social and economic characteristics into a single platform, reducing ambiguity and facilitating the development of important primary healthcare metrics.[2]
The BG Prasad scale, Rahudkar scale, Kulshrestha scale, Udai Pareek scale, Jalota scale, Kuppuswamy scale and Bharadwaj scale are some of the most extensively used and well-acknowledged SES scales.[2]
BG Prasad SES is the most commonly used SES scale for identifying persons by SES. It is dynamic and is based on the consumer price index (CPI).[4]
The CPI for industrial workers (CPI-IW) is used to update scales regularly.[2] CPI is a cumulative total of prices for a set of goods and services. The CPI is commonly used as a proxy for inflation. The CPI figures are calculated using a base year, and the Labour Bureau updates them monthly. The change in income ranges is proportionate to the change in IW CPI values.[3]
The socioeconomic scale developed by BG Prasad was first published in 1961 and was amended in 1968 and 1970 and solely takes into account monthly per capita income which may be used for both urban and rural populations.[4]

Thus, the ability of policymakers to comprehend the accessibility of the public and their buying power for healthcare requires socioeconomic classification of the population based on current price indices.[3] As a result, the BG Prasad scale, which is frequently used to assess SES, has been revised to include the most recent CPI (IW) February 2022 numbers.
Calculation of new income value for the updated BG Prasad socioeconomic classification 2022
New income value = Multiplication factor × old income × 4.63 × 4.93 × 2.88
Whereas multiplication factor = Current consumer price index for industrial worker/base index value in 2016 (i.e., 100)
Example:
Consumer price index numbers for industrial workers − CPI (IW) for February 2022 is 125 (5)
Multiplication factor = 125/100 = 1.25
New income value = Multiplication factor × old income value × 4.63 × 4.93 × 2.88
= 1.25 × 15 × 4.63 × 4.93 × 2.88
= 1232.5.
Therefore, by rounding it off, it comes out to be 1233 for lower class (class V).
