We feel proud to launch the first issue of our journal from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh which is peer-reviewed and published by Wolters Kluwer, a company with a worldwide reputation. It is an open access journal allowing anyone to read its contents and permits authors to self-archive the final accepted version of their submissions without any fee. All our articles will be available online immediately, making this journal, we hope, a global resource. Our authors will retain the copyright to their work, which will allow them to share their articles with whomsoever they please.
We will consider all forms of manuscript related, in any way, to healthcare especially those relevant to its practice in the villages and small towns of India where our renowned institution is proudly situated as well as in other developed and developing countries. We will include original articles, reviews, brief communications, case reports, letters to the editor, images and videos which not only advance the scientific frontiers of medicine but also help improve patient care and also entertain our subscribers. We aim at becoming a scholarly journal which is respected in India and abroad and eventually become included in the major indexing systems. To achieve this, we will initiate a strict but short peer review process using it to print articles of a high quality and endeavour to present them in an attractive format.
We will continuously assess and make known to you the performance of our Editorial team by calculating the average manuscript acceptance and rejection rates and average days to decision by the editors. These metrics will help us decide the rates of acceptance/rejection of manuscripts, and whether our editors are working within the peer review timeline outlined in the journal's policies.
We will also monitor the average time taken by our reviewers to complete a review and number of reviews they were assigned and completed. We will use these metrics to know which reviewers are reliable and identify whether a reviewer may need a break from requests. We will constantly track the data around each stage in our manuscript reviews, including the number of reviewers per manuscript and rounds of revision to ensure each submission, has enough reviewers and is moving through the peer review process efficiently and effectively.
We estimate that the complete review cycle may take an average of 2–3 months. Our main criteria for accepting an article will be whether it is original, whether the conclusions are matched by the data provided and whether it contributes significantly to the practice of healthcare especially in rural and small towns of India, the rest of the country and abroad. We will constantly be asking ourselves two questions – what is already known about this subject and what does this article add.
We hope that this journal will stimulate our colleagues here and elsewhere to scientifically investigate the many problems we have in our health-care system and if possible, provide some workable and sustainable solutions. As editors, we welcome all your comments and suggestions for improvement. It is your journal as much as it is ours.
